GST Return Filing

GST Return Filing is the process by which businesses registered under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) system report their income, sales, purchases, and expenses to the government to calculate their GST liability. Businesses file returns on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis, depending on their type and turnover. Common returns include GSTR-1, detailing sales, and GSTR-3B, summarizing monthly tax liabilities and claiming input tax credits. Filing is done through the GST portal, where businesses enter transaction details, verify, and pay any tax due.

Who should file GST Returns?

Under the GST regime, regular businesses having more than Rs.5 crore as annual aggregate turnover (and taxpayers who have not opted for the QRMP scheme) have to file two monthly returns and one annual return. This amounts to 25 returns each year. Taxpayers with a turnover of up to Rs.5 crore have the option to file returns under the QRMP scheme. The number of GSTR filings for QRMP filers is 9 each year, which include 4 GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B returns each and an annual return. Note that QRMP filers have to pay tax on a monthly basis even though they are filing returns  quarterly.

More About GST Return Filing

Brief about benefits

Online Filing

Online filing of GST returns is a streamlined and efficient process that allows registered taxpayers to submit their tax returns through the Goods and Services Tax (GST) portal. This digital platform enables users to log in using their GSTIN and password, facilitating easy access to various return forms, such as GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, and GSTR-9.

Integrated Payment System

The Integrated Payment System within the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework simplifies the payment process for taxpayers by allowing them to make GST payments directly through the GST portal. This system integrates various payment methods, including net banking, credit and debit cards, and options for electronic fund transfers such as NEFT and RTGS.

Compliance Monitoring

Compliance monitoring in the context of GST return filing involves the systematic oversight of taxpayers' adherence to GST regulations and filing requirements. The GST system is designed to track various compliance metrics, such as the timely submission of returns.

Annual Return Filing

Annual return filing under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) framework is a mandatory requirement for registered taxpayers to summarize their financial activities over the entire financial year. The key forms used for this purpose are GSTR-9, which is applicable to regular taxpayers, and GSTR-9A, specifically for those under the composition scheme.

Penalty and Late Fees

nder the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, penalties and late fees are imposed to ensure compliance and encourage timely filing of returns. If a taxpayer fails to file their GST returns by the due date, a late fee is automatically levied, which amounts to ₹50 per day of delay (₹25 for Central GST and ₹25 for State GST) for regular taxpayers

Reconciliation Features

Reconciliation features in GST return filing play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and consistency of reported financial data between different return forms. The GST system enables taxpayers to reconcile their GSTR-1, which reports outward supplies, with GSTR-3B, the summary return for tax payment.
